Our vacation in Maine was full of sightseeing, sailing, shopping at outlet malls, and lots and lots of seafood...and lots and lots of sangria too. But perhaps the most interesting part of the whole experience took place in the wee morning hours on Friday. In order to avoid traffic (and get our vacation started as soon as possible), we decided to drive through the night to get from NYC to Portland. On the way, we stopped at Mohegan Sun, a casino somewhere in Connecticut (I was asleep in the backseat for the whole drive, so I have no idea where it is actually located). I had never been to a casino before, and I think I was expecting something a bit more James Bond and a little less Disney World. It wasn't that the casino wasn't cool--it DEFINITELY was, with all the brightly-lit tables and machines, the bars and restaurants and shops, the artwork (including the biggest Chihuly sculpture I've ever seen), and the whole nature/Native American/seasonal theme throughout the massive place. But I was a little disappointed that we didn't have to don tuxes and gorgeous low-cut gowns before walking inside. The rest of the visitors to Mohegan Sun were dressed the same as we were in plain ol' jeans and sweatshirts (it is quite chilly at 2am in Connecticut, who knew?).
Needless to say, playing around in the casino was a blast! I knew I wasn't going to win big, but I had a good time losing my predetermined $20 on the slot machines and watching Alex and Aaron at the roulette tables. And what better way to end our two hours at Mohegan Sun than with a stop to the Krispy Kreme counter on the way out?
Perhaps I will meet James at my next casino experience...
